Chinese dissident jailed for 11 years
CHINA'S most prominent dissident, Liu Xiaobo, was sentenced on Friday to 11 years in prison, his lawyer said, for "incitement to subvert state power" with writings calling for civil freedom and multiparty democracy.
Liu, who turns 54 on Monday and a veteran of the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests, was a main author of the Charter 08 manifesto which called for sweeping political reforms.
He stood in the middle of the courtroom when a Beijing Intermediate People's Court judge read the verdict and was not given a chance to respond.
"The court had strictly followed the legal procedures in this case and fully protected Liu's litigation rights," read a court statement, carried by China's official Xinhua news agency.
"We hope he will appeal, but it's up to him," his lawyer Shang Baojun said, adding that Liu has 10 days to decide.
Liu has been in custody since a few days before Charter 08 was launched online on Dec. 10, 2008, to mark the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Irish Bishops resign amid child abuse probe
Two more Roman Catholic bishops in Ireland have submitted their resignations following an investigation into widespread child sex abuse by priests.
Their action brings to four the number of bishops saying they are stepping down following the inquiry's criticism of the church.
The announcement that two more bishops were planning to step down came during Christmas mass in Ireland.
A statement by the bishops, Eamonn Walsh and Raymond Field, was read out to church worshippers at services across Dublin.
In it they said they hoped their resignation would help to bring the peace and reconciliation of Jesus Christ to the victims of child sexual abuse, though they both said they had done nothing wrong.

Anglican leader makes Christmas plea for children
The leader of the worldwide Anglican Church, Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, has used his Christmas sermon to criticise the damaging effects of modern life on children.
Dr Williams said they were being forced to grow up too quickly, crushing their experiences of childhood.
"We shall test you relentlessly in schools. We shall bombard you with advertising, often highly sexualised advertising," he said.
"We shall worry you about your prospects and schools from the word go.
"We shall do all we can to make childhood a brief and rather regrettable stage on the way to the real thing, which is independence."
The Archbishop said in countries wracked by civil war, children were often abducted or turned into killers.
