Kenya drought sparks deadly clashes

maasaizebra_wideweb__470x419,0Community leaders in Kenya say the country's worst drought in decades is causing violence between rival tribes.

A single attack last week left more than 30 people dead.

Across the plains of Samburu, the bleached bones of dead cattle dot the landscape.

For the herders who count their wealth and their survival in cattle, it has become a disastrous situation.

Last week a group of raiders attacked the neighbouring community of Kanampiu at dawn.

When the shooting stopped, 33 people lay dead, along with some 280 animals.

The survivors believe it was part of a long-standing feud that erupted in a fight over land and water.

Their community chairman says it is likely to be the start of a cycle of violence that will not stop until the drought breaks.

  1. Oh no, people who’s actions are none of our business are doing something that is none of our business!

    or alternately

Oh no, populations are competing for resources in the same way that living creatures always have. How dare the get into fights that leave their least capable dead, which reduces the burden on the rest of them. Oh noes, they have a bunch of dead livestock that they must eat, which will give a short term boost to those who lived(and won) and the reduced need to care for cattle and citizenry will ensure that those who did survive are better able to do so. How dare they try the proven means of nature to insure they’re own survival.
